The Athletics Coach Accreditation Framework is designed to progressively introduce the coaching skills required to develop athletes from beginner to elite. In this way, the coaching pathway mimics the athlete’s pathway. The framework is designed to allow coaches of all levels to master their coaching in Track and Field or Recreational Running, be it at the beginner level or the advanced level:
- Track and Field Pathway- The Track and Field Pathway targets traditional athletics and focuses on developing a coach's understanding of fundamental movement skills specific to the various events included in the sport. (The minimum age to become accredited as a Level 1 Youth Coach is 16 years).
- Recreational Running Pathway- The Recreational Running Pathway targets individuals interested in leading running groups that are training for fun run events, 5 km to marathon events. This pathway is also suitable for certified Personal Trainers interested in becoming more involved in the Recreational Running space. (The minimum age to become accredited as a Recreational Run Coach (Level 1) is 16 years).
The skills delivered at each course level are significant to that level of athlete. For example, those coaching beginner athletes need to know how to coach the basic fundamental skills for that level, without giving them too many complex skills. Additionally, coaches of school-age children would want to be a master of the skills delivered at Level 2. Those who are preparing athletes for State and National Championships would be utilizing the skills presented at the Level 3 and above courses.

To become an accredited Sporting Schools coach you must have completed a Level 1 Community Athletics Coach course or above. Once this is completed contact coachaccreditation@athletics.org.au to gain access to the Kids Upskilling course.
Note: PE teachers are eligible to enter directly into the Kids Athletics Program without having completed the Level 1 course.
Recognition of Prior Learning (or RPL) refers to the process of assessing the knowledge and skills an individual has gained outside the Coach Education Framework (e.g., from their studies, work, or other life experiences). If an individual can successfully demonstrate that they meet the required competencies of an athletics coach, Athletics Australia will formally recognise these skills by awarding the relevant coaching accreditation.
