The Brayshaw Aboriginal Regional Scholarship Program (BRASP) is intended to provide financial assistance to regionally based Western Australian athletes of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Through utilising and supporting promotional and talent identification opportunities through Athletics West’s regional servicing (including regional tours through existing programs such as Athletics for the Outback, Aboriginal Community Engagement (ACE) Program and flagship events such as the WA Country Championships and the North West Championships, the Program will identify and recruit suitable candidates to invite into a scholarship program.

The Brayshaw Aboriginal Regional Scholarship will offer athletes:

  • Initial advice and connection to any local programs or coaches
  • Regular check ins with the program over the phone or online, with opportunities for mentoring, coaching and development on topics such as nutrition, competition preparation or shared experiences
  • Financial assistance customised to the individual needs – whether this be new running shoes, travel expenses or chaperon to Country, North West, or State Championships or training equipment. The scholarship is designed to address the athlete’s individual barriers to participation

Athlete Eligibility

Athletes who would like to submit an application must:

  • Permanently reside in regional (country) Western Australia (please note regional athletes who attend school or university and are boarding in metropolitan Perth are not eligible to apply)
  • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • For funding associated with travel costs, athletes must be attending an event within the recognised State or National Pathway for Athletics, these include, WA State Junior Championships, WA State Track and Field Championships, WA Combined Events Championships, State Cross Country Championships, State Road Walking Championships or travelling to a national event as part of the WA State Team
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Be aged 13 to 21 years at the commencement date of the event they are participating in.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants who meet the Athlete Eligibility points above will be assessed on the following criteria. Should the number of applications submitted exceed this number the following criteria will be used to decide the successful applications.

  • Applicants current membership status or previous participation
  • Applicants performances to date if relevant
  • Applicants personal circumstances
  • Applicants potential for progression on the Athletics West competition pathway.

 

Funding Guidelines

Any funds granted will be used for the purpose as defined in the application and funding offer. Applicants can make only one application per season and funding will not exceed $1,000 per applicant. 

Items that cannot be funded include; Meals, medical, school teams/events or any events not recognised within the Athletics West pathway. Requests to cover travel expenses for a parent/guardian chaperone will be considered on a case-by-case basis and only where the athlete would not otherwise be able to travel. 

 

Outcome

All applicants will be contacted via email to inform them of the outcome of their application within one month of submitting their application. All funding decisions are final and made at the discretion of Athletics West.

 

Acquittal

Athletics West will pay funds to successful applicants either through direct booking of travel arrangements or reimbursement upon submission of receipts. This will be discussed with each successful applicant.
