Coach Education | Relay Racing

Athletics West and Australian Athletics are pleased to host a specialised coach education workshop, aimed towards accredited coaches who would like to enhance their technical and developmental expertise in relay racing. This workshop will discuss the key elements of a successful relay performance (4 x 100m and 4 x 400m), particularly focusing on:

  • Changeovers: understand the technique required for a seamless and efficient baton exchange
  • Hand Position: learn the optimal hand placement for passing and receiving the baton in race conditions
  • Three point starts/acceleration mechanics
  • Gaining ground at the 4 x 400m exchange

  • Where: WA Athletics Stadium

Drinks including water, tea/coffee and soft drinks will be provided. 

CPD Points provided to coaches who attend, to go towards Gold/Silver/Bronze Badge

Session Outline

This workshop will include a theoretical presentation to cover key concepts and strategies, a practical demonstration to apply skills, and a Q&A session and will be supported by some of our National Relay athletes. This workshop is provided free to all Australian Athletics accredited coaches (Level 1 or above) and will be led by David Reid, who is the High-Performance Relays Lead with Australian Athletics. 

 

BIOGRAPHY | David Reid

David has an impressive coaching background, having worked with some of Australia's top athletes. He coached one of Australia's best hurdlers, Liz Clay, to two Olympic Games, and coached Kristie Edwards, the National 4x100m relay record holder, to the Paris Olympics. Over the past nine years, David has coached a variety of senior international athletes across different events, as well as multiple National Schools medalists through his role at Emmanuel College on the Gold Coast.

Previously, David worked with Athletics Northern Ireland, where he coached Irish record-holder Amy Foster in the 60m, 100m, and 4x100m relay. As a relay coach for British Athletics, he coached the European Junior relay 4x100m gold medalists and was the lead coach for Northern Ireland at three Commonwealth Games. David’s ultimate goal is to lead five competitive Australian relay teams to the 2032 Olympics.
