Qualification for the Australian Athletics Championships
Any athlete who would like to compete as part of the WA State Team at the Australian Track & Field Championships (Nationals) must be a registered Club (senior) or Independent member with Athletics West.
Athletes must then achieve a qualifying performance in any of the following ways:
- Achieving the entry standard as set by Athletics Australia within the qualifying period. Entry standards can be found here: https://www.athletics.com.au/entrystandards/ The qualifying period began on 1 January 2020 OR
- Placing first (1st), Second (2nd) or third (3rd) in the WA State Championships event, in the event the athlete wishes to enter at the Australian Track & Field Championships will automatically be eligible to register OR
- Placing first (1st), Second (2nd) or third (3rd) in the 2020 WA State All Schools Championship event, in the event the athlete wishes to enter at the Australian Track & Field Championships will automatically be eligible to register. In the case of the WA All School Championships, athletes will automatically qualify up; that is to say, the first three in the 2020 State All Schools U15 100 metres would be qualified for the 2021 U16 100 metres. For athletes in events where the implement weight or hurdle height changes post 1 January, the “Entry by Place” rule still applies.
Additionally:
- An athlete must achieve the entry standard with the correct implement weight or hurdle height.
- Performances can be achieved at all Athletics WA events and approved events held by State Member Associations.
- Acceptable wind readings are up to 4m/s for Under 14 to Under 20 athletes OR 2m/s for Under 23 to Open athletes.
- As per Athletics Australia Rule 147, qualifying standards for females may be achieved in mixed races where the race has been conducted for scheduling purposes and the performance has not been pacer-assisted.
Please note athletes must have resided in Australia for at least two years to compete at the Australian Track & Field Championships.

WA STATE TEAM QUALIFICATION CRITERIA
Travel to the Australian Track & Field Championships
There is no team travel for the Australian Track & Field Championships. Athletes travel independently and make their own travel booking. Athletics West strongly encourage anyone attending the Australian Track & Field Championships to book refundable travel, due to the uncertainty caused by Covid-19.
Athletics West Team Support & Levy
The Athletics West State Team Levy covers the support provided for athletes in the WA State Team. In addition to administrative support for athletes nominating for the 2021 Australian Track & Field Championships, Athletics West provide Team Managers and medical support (physio/massage) for the duration of the Championships to support the WA State Team athletes. WA State Team Managers provide event day support to ensure all athletes are across competition procedures including call room, scratching, and event clashes. To ensure this is effectively managed, Athletics West ask you to please provide current contact details in the event team management need to contact you during the Championships.

World Under 20 Championships
Athletes intending to qualify for the World Athletics Under 20 Championships are expected to compete in the Under 20 age group for their event at the 2021 Australian Track & Field Championships, as this is the nominated selection trial. State Team Uniform
All Australian junior athletes (U14-U20) entered in the Australian Track & Field Championships must wear their correct Member Association (WA State Team) uniform. The only essential uniform items are either a competition singlet or crop top.
All Australian open athletes entered in the Australian Track & Field Championships may wear Club/State/National or Sponsorship uniform in line with the Athletics Australia Uniform Guidelines.
