CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS DELIVER A SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND OF ATHLETICS

Published Fri 21 Aug 2020

It was an action-packed week of athletics with athletes taking to the pavement, grass and sand, with the Little Athletics Road Walking Championships on Saturday and the WA State Cross Country Championships on Sunday.

The Little Athletics Road Walking Championships was the final event for road walking in the 2020 Winter Series and saw a wide range of Centres in attendance with consistent numbers. Congratulations to all competing athletes and we would like to extend our gratitude to the Cockburn Little Athletics Centre and the WA Athletics Officials Club for hosting a great Championships.

Sunday’s winter weather didn’t deter hundreds of eager cross country athletes, with an impressive turnout at the Athletics West State Cross Country Championships. The event was held for the first time in scenic Kings Park, with traditional Championship races complemented with new initiatives in the all-comers and junior racing opportunities. The 193% increase in participation across Championship races, saw highly competitive fields vie for the State title. It was fantastic to see our elite athletes take to the course, including World Championships Marathon representative Rochelle Rogers claiming gold in the Open Women’s 10km and Ben Chamberlain take the win the Open Men’s 10km, pipping training partner William Chebor in the final stages of the race.

The final three events of the 2020 Winter Series are scheduled for tomorrow (Cross Country Event 3, hosted by Belmont Little Athletics Centre at  Jorgensen Park) and two further Championship events next weekend (28-29 August), with the WA Road Walking Championships and the WA Little Athletics Cross Country Championships. Entries are still open for the Championship events, offering races for athletes of all ages, with the Road Walking Championships catering for athletes aged 12 (as at the 31 December 2020) and over and the Cross Country event catering for Little Athletics members, with Under 20, Open and Masters races over the 3km and 6km.

We would like to recognise the incredible contribution of our officials and volunteers, many of whom supported both events and braved the cold and rain on Sunday to make these events possible.
