DAY TWO RECAP | 2022 AUS LITTLE ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Published Sun 24 Apr 2022

Day Two of the Coles Australian Little Athletics Championships saw WA return to the podium with Sophie Williams, Jaxon Stewart and the Under 15 Mixed 4x100m relay team all returning to Perth with medals.

Sophie Williams (Ridgewood LAC) once again had a busy schedule with the Ridgewood LAC athlete lining up in four events on Day Two. Williams was quick in the 100m heats and made it through to the Final to place 8th, however, she backed up that performance quickly with a gold in the Under 13 Triple Jump. A talented group of jumpers saw the lead change throughout the competition, but Williams’ third jump of 10.89m was enough to clinch the tile. WA’s depth in the Triple Jump was on show with Tayla Hadfield (Inglewood LAC) and Kate Philpott (Hamersley LAC) finishing fifth and eighth respectively.

WA’s Under 15 Heptathletes faced tough competition for the boys' and girls' titles. Jaxon Stewart (Joondalup LAC) finished strong to claim bronze in the boys' competition. A win in the Javelin competition helped Stewart move up from fifth to third, which was followed by a solid result in the High Jump to cement his bronze medal. Rhianna di Giuseppe (Bunbury LAC) also moved up the ranks after finishing Day One in eighth. Di Giuseppe’s top ten results in Long Jump and Javelin saw her finish sixth overall in the girl’s competition.

Kate Philpott and Paul Ehioghae (Southern Districts) were both impressive in the 80m Hurdles with both athletes progressing through to the final. Philpott ran well to cross the line in 13.66 and place sixth, while Ehioghae just missed out on a medal finishing fourth in 12.58. Milly Holdich (Baldivis LAC) will return to Perth with her head held high after a solid competition in the Under 13 Girls High Jump finishing fourth on countback with a best clearance of 1.50m. While Tristian Wilson (Belmont LAC) once again proved he is a thrower to watch in the years to come with a fifth place in the Boy’s Shot Put.

The Coles Australian Little Athletics Championships were wrapped up with the Under 13 Medley Relays and the mixed Under 15 4x100m Relay. The Under 15’s capped off their campaign with an impressive run by Thadeus Bowen (Kingsway LAC), Jaxon Stewart, Imogen Boss (Hamersley LAC) and Rhianna Di Giuseppe seeing WA secure the bronze medal in 49.40. WA’s Under 13 Medley team of Kate Philpott, Georgia Mammone (Kingsway LAC), Sophie Williams and Sasha Pallis (UWA LAC) were unlucky not to get up onto the podium, finishing fourth in 2:29.94. While Callum Shaw (Belmont LAC), Jack Lake (Kingsway LAC), Paul Ehioghae and Cooper Bennett (Hamersley LAC) put in a courageous effort in the Medley relay to place sixth in 2:29.88.

Congratulations to the entire WA team who competed at Lakeside Stadium for the 2022 Coles Australian Little Athletics Championships.
