EVENT RECAP: GO FOR 2&5 WA ALL SCHOOLS

Published Tue 03 Nov 2020

The 2020 Go For 2&5 WA All Schools Championships has concluded with students from more than 125 WA schools taking part. In total, 407 athletes competed to take out the 2020 State School title, with nine WA junior athletes setting potential state and national records.

The Para Athletes headlined with 19 new pending Australian Records for Julian Miller, Bridget Gibbons, Deacon Ayres, Brock Kenny, Michael McDonald and Reese Prior. The combination of new Under 15 and 17 Para Athletics record age groups means the athletes will lead the country into the 2020-21 season. Athletics West will confirm the status of the records upon their ratification in the coming weeks.

The U18 short track ignited a fantastic competition between two up and coming runners in Taylah Cruttenden and Angel Turner. Friday Night saw Cruttenden storm home to claim the 100m title ahead of Turner in 11.92. However, the tables turned with a nail-bitingly close 200m final that saw Turner get the win over Cruttenden by one one-hundredth of a second. The two young runners will undoubtedly be going head-to-head over the coming months as we inch closer to the 2021 State Titles. The Boys Under 18 100m Final was equally as tense, with Declan Wagner and Ethan Light providing an exciting conclusion to night one, with Wagner claiming the winner by two one-thousandths of a second. If he was disappointed, Light didn't show it and went on to win the 200m title on Sunday morning.

Danielle Graham and Brandon Ford notched up a memorable weekend with both middle distant runners collecting a WA State Record. Graham opened up her 2020 All Schools campaign with gold and a new State Record in the Under 14 1500m race in a time of 4:34.30, while Ford set a new All-Comers record of 8:18.61 in the Boys Under 18 3000m.

Rounding out the weekend's record-breaking haul was Robert Marchesi-Scott in the Boys U16 Hammer with a State Record throw of 63.35m.

While no Australian All Schools Championships will be held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Athletics West will be announcing a State Team in recognition of the outstanding accomplishments of WA's top school-aged athletes. The final team will be announced next week, and those selected will be invited to wear Team WA kit at an upcoming Go For 2&5 Track and Field program.
