POACHING AND COACHING IN ATHLETICS
Published Thu 03 Oct 2024
The 2024-25 Athletic West Summer Season powered by Go For 2&5 is almost here! As the season approaches, we know that athletes and coaches are eager to get started and make the most out of the new season.
As part of the season preparations, it’s important for both athletes and coaches to interact and engage one another respectively.
In athletics, coaching is not just about training; it's about mentorship and fostering a positive environment. To maintain integrity and fairness within our community, it’s essential to follow proper coaching etiquette and avoid the unethical practice of athlete poaching.
As per the Athletics Australia Code of Conduct coaches must not “pursue, either covertly or overtly, an athlete that is presently engaged in a formal coaching relationship with another coach.”
Interactions between a coach and an athlete must be transparent and consistent with the Athletics Australia Code of Conduct.
Poaching and recruiting athletes from other groups unethically damages trust, team dynamics, and athlete experiences. By working together, clubs, coaches and athletes can support each other and create a better experience for all athletes.
FOR COACHES
-
Do not approach athletes who currently have a coach.
-
Do not undermine an athlete's relationship with their current coach.
-
Do not make any unwanted advances or aggressive behaviour when talking with potential athletes.
If an athlete does approach you for advice, you should start with encouraging them to have a conversation with their current coach first.
If an athlete wants to find out more information about you as a coach, you should focus on your approach to coaching and must refrain from making any remarks about the athlete's current coach. This includes making any promises about increased performance if the athlete were to switch or passing judgement on other coaches' approach to the sport.
FOR ATHLETES
Athletes are ultimately responsible for who they wish to train with, and it is important to maintain respectful relationships in the community. If an athlete wishes to change coaches, they are more than welcome to and should ensure they conclude their current coaching arrangement before engaging a new coach or approaching training squads.
Respecting coaching boundaries and avoiding poaching strengthens the athletics community, benefiting both athletes and coaches. Let’s continue to uphold these values and promote a fair and positive environment for everyone.
