VALE CHARLES 'CHILLA' PORTER

Published Mon 17 Aug 2020

Athletics West would like to pay tribute to the valuable contribution of Charles ‘Chilla’ Porter, who passed away aged 84 on Sunday 16 August 2020.

Chilla was instrumental in the revival of athletics in Western Australia, obtaining finance to keep the sport alive after bankruptcy threatened the future of the State’s Athletics Association. Chilla held significant roles in the administration of the sport, including Chief Executive Officer and then as a Board Member and delegate to Athletics Australia.

An outstanding athlete himself, Chilla was a two-time Olympian and silver medallist at Melbourne 1956, where he had an extraordinary six-hour battle against the then world record holder. He represented Australia at two Commonwealth Games, where he won two silver medals, in addition to achieving seven national titles and Athletics Australia Hall of Fame induction in 2011.

Our thoughts are with the Porter family during this sad time.
