2022 WESTERN AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS CUP
28-30 OCTOBER 2022
ERN CLARK ATHLETICS CENTRE, CANNINGTON WA
The 2022 Western Australian Schools Cup (WA Schools Cup) is a new competition format aimed to encourage competition between secondary schools as part of the WA All Schools Championships.
This year, the WA Schools Cup competition will be the qualification event for Athletics West to nominate teams to the 2022 National Schools Challenge, set to be contested in Adelaide on Monday 12 December, following the Australian All Schools Championships on the 9-11 December. The WA Schools Cup replaces the Nitro Schools Challenge and former Schools Knockout formats, in line with the new National Schools Challenge event.
DIVISIONS FOR THE WA SCHOOLS CUP
Three divisions will be contested for each gender:
- Junior (Under 14 and Under 15 age groups) - Born 2008, 2009 and 2010
- Intermediate (Under 16 and 17 age groups) – Born 2006 and 2007
- Senior (Under 18 and Under 19 age groups) – Born 2004 and 2005
Competitors’ age is calculated as at 31 December 2022.
The winning school from each division will be displayed on a digital leaderboard on the Athletics West website and receive a digital badge.
The winning school across all divisions (overall point score winner) will receive a perpetual trophy to display at the school following the event. The trophy can be presented to the school at an assembley or similar event, by an Australian Team representative and Athletics West.
ENTRY & TEAM COMPOSITION
Athletes submit their entry to the WA All Schools Championships and pay the entry fee as individuals. Schools do not need to enter/nominate to contest the WA Schools Cup as all schools are eligible to contest the competition where they have individual athletes competing.
Schools wishing to enter athletes directly with Athletics West can do so by contacting opal@athleticswest.com.au and we will provide a spreadsheet to complete. Please note that an entry fee per individual is payable ($10 Championship fee + $15 per event). This will be invoiced directly to the school for bulk entries.
At the WA All Schools Championships, athletes will be allocated points based on their placing in each individual point-scoring event (see event list below), as follows:
1st Place 10 points
2nd Place 8 points
3rd Place 6 points
4th Place 5 points
5th Place 4 points
6th Place 3 points
7th Place 2 points
8th Place 1 point
There is no limit to the number of athletes that represent the school in any division, however only the top eight athletes will score points.
For each division, points are calculated based on the relevant age groups. For example, for the Junior Division, results from the Under 14 and Under 15 age groups contribute to the overall point score.

PROGRESSION TO NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHALLENGE
The Schools Cup competition will be the qualification event for Athletics West to select and nominate teams for the 2022 National Schools Challenge, set to be contested in Adelaide on Monday 12 December, following the Australian All Schools Championships on the 9-11 December.
Whilst schools are not required to nominate for the WA Schools Cup, if the school would like their teams to be in contention for selection for the National Schools Challenge you must nominate here.
For each division as specified above, schools who have nominated for selection with the top two (2) point scores will be offered a position in the National Schools Challenge.
Schools will be selected for each division based on final point scores from the WA All Schools Championships. Schools are only eligible to enter teams for the National Schools Challenge in the divisions they have been selected. E.g. a school may have a Junior Girls and Intermediate Boys team selected and these are the only teams they can send to the National Schools Challenge.
Schools with selected teams will be contacted by the 1 November 2022.
NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHALLEGE TEAM FORMAT & DIVISIONS
The National Schools Challenge is a team-based event and will consist of a maximum of 16 teams, with notionally two representatives from each state/territory. Where there are team vacancies, Athletics Australia will offer available places to any other teams that have expressed a wish to be considered at their discretion.
Three divisions will be contested for each gender:
- Junior (Under 15) - Born 2008, 2009 and 2010
- Intermediate (Under 17) – Born 2006-2010
- Senior (Under 19) – Born 2004-2010
Competitors’ age is calculated as at 31 December 2022. Athletics can compete up an age group.
If selected for the National Schools Challenge, schools can select a team according to the below criteria.
Schools do not have to select athletes based on the WA All Schools Championships and can nominate any student of the appropriate age to represent the team as long as they are a bona fide student at the school in 2022.
Students may only compete in only a single team and in a single division (i.e., students may not compete across two or more teams in the same division; or compete in two or more divisions).
